VA Akaka Clinic
The new Daniel Kahikina Akaka VA Clinic is a state-of-the art, multi-specialty outpatient clinic, provides primary and mental health care, x-ray, laboratory and diagnostic services, a pharmacy, and specialty care for Veterans on Oʻahu, and throughout the Pacific Islands.
Completed in April 2024, the newly constructed one-story facility of 88,675 sf serves approximately 15,000 Veterans living on the west side of Oahu. The clinic's goal primary goal is to create a welcoming, supportive environment where Veterans' care is prioritized and supported. Other top initiatives are enhancing accessibility and convenience, creating a collaborative and inviting environment, fostering socialization and community and providing state-of-the art facilities and services while aligning with environmental and cultural values.
Design Approach and Scope
The project required a collaborative design approach, with input from various stakeholders, including Veterans, healthcare professionals, and community members, to ensure that the clinic's design and layout met the needs and preferences of its users. The clinic's design incorporates native plants and sustainable features such as solar panels, reflecting a commitment to environmental sustainability and cultural values, as well as providing a visually appealing and environmentally friendly space for Veterans. Furniture was focused on creating warm, inviting spaces with outdoor gathering spots for connecting and collaborative and functional staff areas. Exam room casework and carts, desking, filing, seating, conference areas and outdoor furniture were part of the overall scope of work.
Clinic Services
The clinic offers a wide range of services to support Veterans' health and well-being, including mental health services, Chaplain Services, and Whole Health programs. Recognizing the importance of socialization on mental health, the clinic provides ample social spaces for connecting with fellow Veterans. Additionally, health coaches are available to offer personalized support and motivation for making healthier choices. Various amenities are also offered including valet service, courtesy shuttles and coffee shop. Medical services include audiology booths, physical therapy areas, and radiology with the VA's first MRI scanner in the Pacific ensure comprehensive care for Oahu's Veterans.
