Creating a Functional Workspace Through Sustainable Design
Discover how the University of Hawaiʻi Foundation transformed a historic space into a sustainable, collaborative workplace through thoughtful design.
The University of Hawaiʻi Foundation (UHF) is dedicated to fostering philanthropic support for the University of Hawaiʻi system, managing over 7,000 gift accounts, and connecting donors, alumni, and the community. When the organization moved to its new home at the historic former Atherton YMCA building, the goal was to create a functional and collaborative workspace that would enhance communication and efficiency—while working within a limited budget as a nonprofit entity.
Rather than purchasing all-new furniture, UHF embraced sustainability by repurposing 60 donated Herman Miller Ethospace workstations. Originally purchased by American Savings Bank, these workstations had previously served HECO and underwent multiple reconfigurations before being generously donated to UHF. The challenge? Designing a cohesive, functional layout using an inventory of existing furniture with different configurations, sizes, and finishes collected over several years.
Collaboration and Design Process
Office Pavilion worked closely with UHF to reimagine the space, designing a layout that accommodated 60 staff members, students, and hoteling spaces while maintaining efficiency and aesthetics. The design featured L-shaped and linear workstations with 54”H panels, three-high stacking tiles, file pedestals, and integrated electrical power.
Beyond design, Office Pavilion played a crucial role in project management—dismantling, inventorying, organizing, transporting, and storing the furniture for over a year until the space was ready for installation. Coordination with The Wilhelm Group and UH IT Services ensured the project stayed on time and on budget.
Impact and Outcomes
By repurposing high-quality contract furniture, UHF was able to create a cost-effective, sustainable workspace that supports collaboration and productivity. Its new location at Atherton provides student interns with easy access to the office while allowing UHF to meet with donors and showcase the adjacent RISE project and UH campus.
This project is a testament to how strategic design and sustainable practices can create a functional, professional, and inspiring workspace—without compromising quality or breaking the budget.
This project exemplifies Office Pavilion's commitment to going beyond just meeting immediate needs by fostering enduring relationships that promote mutual growth. Our role extends past installation, offering ongoing support and adaptive solutions that evolve alongside our clients' changing demands. By repurposing high-quality furnishings, we not only support the UH Foundation's sustainability goals but also reduce environmental impact, reflecting our dedication to creating sustainable communities. This commitment is a cornerstone of our mission to Create the Best Places to Work, Serve, Learn and Heal.
